Latin Times Magazine: Where are you and your family from? What is your Hispanic heritage? Dr. Jose Diaz: I am a Pediatric Intensive Care physician. When I was in high school, I knew that I wanted to be in the medical field. I worked with my uncle who was a cardiologist and decided that I would like to work in an area that targets critical illnesses. Although I fainted the first time that I saw blood, I love what I do for a living now.
Dr. Jose Diaz is in Miami, Florida is a recipient of Latin Times 2020 TOP Florida Latino Lideres Award!
Latin Times Magazine: Tell us about what you do for a living and how you got into it Dr. Jose Diaz: My field is very specialized. I deal with young patients that have critical illnesses and conditions. It is very rewarding to see them come to the unit and get better. It is also very difficult to see children in pain and suffering.
Latin Times Magazine: In your industry, what would you say separates you from your competition
Dr. Jose: Everyone in every field is overcoming challenges and obstacles with COVID. In my field, it has been making sure that we keep the patients and their families safe. We need to take a lot of additional precautions to make sure that we don’t transmit the illness and that all the medical personnel stays healthy, so we can continue taking care of our patients.
Latin Times Magazine: Tell us about your biggest achievement, and how you achieved it (Covid or non-related)
Dr. Jose Diaz: In the professional area, my biggest achievement has been coming to this country as a young physician and validating my degree. I was very proud to have completed both my residency and fellowship in the United States. In my personal life, my biggest achievement is definitely my family.
Latin Times Magazine: What is next for you? What can people expect to see from you? Dr. Jose Diaz: I will keep doing what I do! I will continue working hard to deliver the best possible care for my patients.
Latin Times Magazine: What words of encouragement can you offer? Dr. Jose Diaz: I think that it is important to believe in yourself and, if you really want something, go for it. There are many doctors that come from other countries and find it very hard to practice their profession. There are many ways to still be involved in the health field and, if that is the goal, there is always a way.
Latin Times Magazine: Is there anything I didn’t ask that you would like to share? Dr. Jose Diaz: Thank you for this recognition and for reporting positive news about the Hispanic community. It is very important, especially during these tough times, to find ways to unite and celebrate our culture.
Latin Times Magazine: What is YOUR comida Latina favorita? Dr. Jose Diaz: Colombian ajiaco soup. My wife is from Puerto Rico and I love their mofongo and pina colada too.
