LTM: Tell us about what you do for a living and how you got into it.
I was born and raised in the Republic of Panama and am the oldest of 12 siblings. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Education and worked as an elementary school teacher for twenty-eight years, finishing the last year before retirement as the principal. I moved to the United States in 1989 with my husband Ralph Furlong and my two kids. I became the president of the Panamanian Club of Tampa Bay and served for 8 years. Following that, I volunteered with different organizations and have continued to do so in the present. I love being able to help others.
LTM: Why do you feel you were nominated?
This award was nominated to me because of my work in the community volunteering with different organizations, including the Latin Times, for the past 26 years.
LTM: During a Covid-19, tell us your biggest challenge/ obstacle.
Covid-19 was very hard for me because I was not able to get out and help my community. I found that I was still able to support others by reaching out through phone calls and video chats.
Tell us about your biggest achievement in business or personal.
My biggest achievement was serving as the Panamanian Club of Tampa Bay President for 8 years.
LTM: What is next for you? What can people expect to see from you?
Next for me is to continue doing what I love, helping others.
LTM: What does being a U.S. citizen mean to you?
I am grateful to be a US citizen of this great country full of opportunities and freedom. This country has opened doors for my family and me to live here since 1989.
