FREEDOM TO WALK FOUNDATION HOSTS SEVENTH ANNUAL CARNIVAL GALA
Foundation that helps children and adults improve their walking abilities seek sponsors for a successful gala

TAMPA – Freedom to Walk Foundation was founded seven years ago, to help improve the lives of children and adults with Foot Drop, caused by upper motor neuron injury such as: Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury. As in past years, the 501(c)3 non-profit, is hosting its Seventh Annual Gala to help educate and assist people experiencing Foot Drop, who need funding for the purchase of the WalkAide®, a Functional Electrical Stimulation device (FES) that help them to Walk.

On Saturday, October 5, 2019, the Seventh Annual Carnival Gala will be held at the Marriott Tampa Airport, 4200 George J Bean Pkwy, Tampa, from 6:00PM – 11:00PM for an Evening of Dancing, Food Stations, Raffles, Silent Auction, Stilt Walker, Aerialist, Juggler, Samba Dancers, and more! Dress to Impress, Business or Festive Attire! Cash Bar!

Foot Drop is a condition characterized by weakness or paralysis of the muscles involved in lifting the front part of the foot necessary for people to walk. It causes a person to either drag the foot and toes or engage in a high-stepping walk called steppage gait. It’s estimated that approximately 75,000 children and adults in Florida will suffer from Foot Drop and over 1 million in the United States.

The WalkAide®, when worn on the calf, sends electric impulses to the affected foot, causing the foot and leg to lift and follow through as they would with a natural, unimpaired gait. The WalkAide®, is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but most insurance companies are denying coverage. With an out-of- pocket cost of $5,000 per unit, the cost is prohibitive for many who see the device as an invaluable opportunity to improve their quality of life.

At the Sixth Annual Havana Nights Gala, WalkAide® Recipient, Magnus is 4 years old and looked handsome in his bowtie. He was unable to walk due to blisters caused by the rubbing of the ankle foot orthosis (AFO) on his foot.

He was born at 26 weeks’ gestation. He spent 7 months in neonatal intensive care unit. He suffered a Brain Hemorrhage, a type of Stroke, a few weeks after birth. He had heart surgery four months after he was born. Because of extreme prematurity, he was diagnose with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia, form of chronic lung disease. He is also, diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Foot Drop. Mom said “Magnus Is A Miracle Child!”

“You can help change the lives of others who will greatly benefit from this much needed device by supporting and participating in the Freedom to Walk Foundation’s Seventh Annual Carnival Gala. Because of the sponsorships, we will be able to provide a device or two at the Gala, so we are urging sponsors to support us on different levels,” said Daisy Vega, Founder and President of Freedom to Walk Foundation, who has Multiple Sclerosis and has personally benefitted from the use of the WalkAide® which she purchased in 2012.

Vega is seeking sponsors who will receive a number of benefits and notoriety at the gala. Sponsors have until August 5, 2019, to register. As soon as the Foundation receives sponsorship agreements and payment, they will immediately post the sponsor’s information on the foundation’s website. For sponsorship or tickets, go to www.FreedomToWalkFoundation.org/Carnival or contact Daisy Vega at (813) 546-2329 or Daisy.Vega@FreedomToWalkFoundation.org.
