Elect Cissy Boza Sevelin for Circuit Court Judge: Group 25. A Voice of Reason for Justice.

Cissy Boza Sevelin has been a lifelong resident of Hillsborough County for the last 58 years.   She is a family woman, married to Ralph Sevelin, with two beautiful daughters, a son, and stepson and an eight-year-old granddaughter.

Cissy and her husband, Ralph, reside in Thonotosassa with their two Havanese pups, Buster and Mitzi.

Cissy grew up in Hillsborough County and attended the University of South Florida.  She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting and Finance.  While residing in the Tampa Bay Area, Cissy attended the University of Orlando/Barry University and received her Masters of Business Administration while attending law school at Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law where she received her Jurist Doctorate.

Cissy Boza Sevelin has worked hard her entire legal career to ensure justice, fairness and an equal playing field for all of her clientsCissy is a firm believer in the fair administration of justice and judicial integrity. The retirement of the Honorable Robert A. Foster has opened a door and created an opportunity for her to continue to serve the people of Hillsborough County.  If the voters deem Cissy worthy, her goal is to ensure that she will work for a justice system that people can trust to deliver consistent treatment, fair trials and access to justice regardless of their financial standing, which is the true meaning of servant leadership.

Cissy Sevelin is a sole practitioner whose current entire practice consists of providing pro bono service to indigent clients.  Prior to opening her pro bono practice in October 2013, Cissy served as a federal judicial career and term law clerk for nine years with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida for the Honorable Alexander L. Paskay, the Honorable David H. Adams, the Honorable Jeffery P. Hopkins, the Honorable Barry S. Schermer and the Honorable Caryl E. Delano. While employed with the Bankruptcy Court, Cissy wrote countless opinions on various issues.

Since opening her practice, Cissy Sevelin has donated her time in the areas of family law, domestic violence, dependency and delinquency, bankruptcy and advance directives. She volunteers for the Bay Area Legal Services’ Volunteer Lawyers Program, working at the Domestic Violence Assistance Project clinic and on the Case Referral Panel.  She is also extensively involved with the nonprofit organization Are You Safe, Inc., whose mission is to provide legal and social services to victims of domestic violence, and the nonprofit organization Crossroads for Florida Kids, Inc., as an Attorney ad Litem representing children in dependency proceedings, including those charged with delinquencies.  Further, Cissy serves as a volunteer teen court judge through the Juvenile Diversion Program and as a Guardian ad Litem in dependency court.  If that is not enough, Cissy jumps in and helps out with other community projects when time permits.

There is no question that Cissy Sevelin is committed to our legal profession and our community.  Throughout her professional career, Cissy has worked vigorously to provide free legal services to members of our community that could not otherwise afford the services of an attorney. Cissy’s efforts to provide legal assistance to children, youth, victims of domestic violence and indigent clients have not gone unrecognized.  Thus far, in 2016 Cissy was acknowledged by her peers and was honored with the Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono award for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit on January 28, 2016.  In March 2016 and March 2017, Cissy Sevelin was also recognized by Hillsborough County Bar Association and presented The Rosemary Award for Proven Producer for her pro bono contributions to the community.  In September 2015 and 2014, respectively, Cissy was recognized as the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year for providing services to victims of domestic violence by Are You Safe, Inc.  In April of 2015, Cissy was presented with the Outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Lawyer award by the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit & H.A.V.E. a HEART.Are You Safe, Inc. In September 2016, Cissy was presented with the Alberto Romero Pro Bono Attorney of the Year.  

Over the past 30 plus years, Cissy has held various positions. She has extensive knowledge in the field of bankruptcy, banking, accounting, and mediating and in management and uses this knowledge to serve the public.  Cissy believes that her work outside of the legal arena – together with the time she has served in federal court, will serve her well and will bring valuable experience to the court.

Cissy’s ability to speak Spanish allows her to assist Hispanic clients without the need of a translator.

The young Cissy Boza began working when she was twelve year’s old for Olympia Bakery located on Howard Ave. Cissy worked all through college and continued to work while attending law school.  For much of her career, she worked full-time while raising three children trying to balance work, family, and school. Cissy was also a small-business owner, having founded Victorian Gardens in September 1998, a company that provided a ceremony and reception venue located in Thonotosassa, Fl.

Cissy Sevelin is committed to the rule of law, treating all participants in the court system with dignity and respect, and she will apply the law fairly and impartially. If elected, she will proudly take the Oath of Office; she will swear to support the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the State of Florida. Cissy understands that it is her duty to apply the law as it is written and not as she may wish it to be. Cissy will faithfully exercise this duty in all the cases assigned to her and it will be her privilege and honor to serve the people of Hillsborough County.

Cissy Sevelin has the qualifications and knowledge to be an excellent Hillsborough County Circuit Judge.  She has respect for the Constitution, fidelity to the law, personal integrity, appropriate judicial temperament and professional competence.  If elected, she will be fair and impartial to all who come before her. Cissy has great respect for the law and the residents of Florida.  One of the lessons Cissy has drawn from her experiences is that justice depends not only on the laws, but on those who interpret and apply the law.  If elected, she wants to be a judge because equality before the law isn’t just a legal principle to her; it is her entire reason for being a lawyer, mediator and law clerk.  If elected, she will be the kind of judge who treats everyone with respect, who provides to everyone a full and fair hearing, and who strives to reach a just result.  If given the opportunity, she will be the kind of judge that our system needs and depends on.
